Distribution of food parcels is underway in Akhaltsikhe Municipality

The Akhaltsikhe Municipality in Georgia’s southern region of Samtskhe-Javakheti is providing food packages to families of extremely poor people living in its territory. The food aid consists of essential products, such as flour, oil, sugar, pasta, rice and chicken.

The Families of poor people living in Akhaltsikhe Municipality and temporarily registered in the municipality territory will receive food packages.

The mayor’s representatives in administrative units delivered the food packages to the beneficiaries living in Akhaltsikhe City and the municipality’s villages. The distribution of food aid started on December 20, 2023, and will continue until the end of the month.

According to the social assistance rule from the budget of Akhaltsikhe Municipality for 2023, 155 low-income families and 97 families temporarily registered in the municipality are eligible for this assistance. The total amount of the food aid is 25,200 Georgian lari (about 7,500 US dollars).

The mayor of Akhaltsikhe Municipality, Irakli Lazarashvili, said that the food aid is a part of the municipality’s social support program, which aims to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable groups of the population. He also thanked the local authorities and the volunteers for their cooperation and assistance in distributing the food packages.

The Akhaltsikhe Municipality is one of the ten municipalities in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, which covers an area of 1,010.4 km2 (390 sq mi) and has a population of 39,463 people.

The city of Akhaltsikhe is the administrative centre of the municipality and the region. The municipality is known for its historical and cultural heritage, such as the Rabati Castle and the Atsquri Fortress.

In connection with New Year’s Eve, 190 beneficiaries of the “Akhaltsikhe House of Virtues” were given festive food. The beneficiaries of the House of Virtues and local government representatives congratulated the upcoming New Year. They wished each of them health and courage. They also received financial aid from the municipality hall for the New Year.
