REPowerEU plan launched to tackle energy crisis in Europe

Europe: The European Commission has announced the launch of #REPowerEU action plan to tackle the energy crisis that arose in Europe following the Russia-Ukraine War. The plan focuses on ending Europe’s dependency on Russian fossil fuels for energy.

The interrupted supplies from the Russian pipelines had threatened the energy security of the European countries. This is another step from the European Commission that expresses its solidarity with Ukraine.

The spokesperson of the European Commission for climate action and energy, Tim Mcphie, while publicizing the plan, stated that In 2021, Europe spent 120 billion Euros for acquiring coal, oil and gas from Russia.

This has another side to it, as for every Euro that Europe spent, Russia used it for the invasion of Ukraine. Therefore, by cutting off the imports of fossil fuels, a significant impact can be made on the financial resources available to Russia.

Russia, for a long time, has used its energy resources as a weapon against European countries to impose sanctions against it. The energy supplies from Nord Stream 1 had almost been cut off, which had driven fears of blackouts in Europe and having to freeze in the cold weather in the absence of heating facilities.

Earlier, the European Commission introduced the ninth package of sanctions against Russia that pressurizes the Kremlin to end its aggression in Ukraine. Under these sanctions, 200 more individuals would be added to the sanctioned list, along with three banks and other entities as well. The Russian propaganda is to be cut off, with four channels being proposed to be taken off the air, as well as its access to the Shahed drones to be cut down.
