European Commission announces opening of Blue Book Traineeship

Europe: The European Commission has announced that the applications for the Blue Book Traineeship have been opened for the citizens. Beginning from October 2023, the Blue Book Traineeship will be a five-month training program for which the enrolled applicants will be paid for. The traineeship program is open for university graduates with at least three years of study. 

During the training process, the applicants will gain insights into the process and policies of European institutions and official bodies. Once the training is completed, the citizens can contribute to the European Union’s day-to-day work while putting the academic theories so learned, into actual practice on the grounds.

The deadline for applying for the Blue Book Traineeship is January 31st,2023, at 12:00 PM (midday, CET). The European Commission presented two types of the traineeship, including Administrative and Translation Traineeship.


The Blue Book Traineeship is open to all EU Citizens, irrespective of their age. Additionally, a limited number of slots have also been allocated to non-EU nationals as well. 

For University graduates, the criteria is as follows:

  1. The applicant has completed a standard 3-year higher education degree with a minimum EQF-6 level, corresponding to a complete Bachelor’s cycle or equivalent. The university’s confirmation is required to validate the presented degree. Along with this, the following documents will be required:

    i)Diplomas or certificates which clearly indicate final grades

    ii) A proof of minimum EQF 6 level

      2. Have no prior work experience of any kind in any EU official body or agency, delegation, Members of the European Parliament (MEP) or Advocates General at the Court of Justice of the European Union (EUCJ).

        3. Efficiency in multiple languages

        4. Administrative Traineeship: Knowledge of two EU official languages, which are English, French or German, at the C1 or C2 level and the second one at the B2 level, at least as per the Common European Framework of Reference for languages.

        5. Translation Traineeship: Ability to translate into the target language from two other EU official languages.

The applicants receive additional points for their work experience, international profile demonstrated through education, work or volunteering experience abroad and work aptitude and rare fields of study.


The application procedure consists of three steps:

2. Complete and submit the application form along with your supporting documents

3. If successful, you will be invited to check the openings published on the VBB portal and apply for a chosen traineeship post.


The trainee’s routine duties during the training will consist of the following:

  1. Attending, organizing meetings, working groups and public hearings
  2. Research, draft and edit documents, including reports and consultations
  3. Respond to the inquiries
  4. Playing an active part in project management
  5. Translation, Revising Translations and researching terminology
