Cannes Effect: Netflix acquires ‘May December’ starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore at $11 Million

After creating a sensational buzz at the Cannes Film Festival 2023, the North American rights of Todd Haynes’ directorial drama, May December have been acquired by Netflix for a whopping $11 million. The movie stars Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in the lead roles and will be released later this year.  

The ‘May December’ deal from Netflix has so far been the big deal of Cannes Film Festival 2023, and a deal of this size is sure to vitalize the North American marketplace, it being indicative of Cannes films still being alive and well. In fact, the deal comes out as an exceptional one from Netflix, being the acquisition of North American rights very unusual.

Notably, the film was premiered at Cannes on Saturday evening, receiving an 8-minute long standing ovation from the audience and positive reactions from all over.

The film, starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman in the lead, follows an actress who embeds herself within a family to study them for a film where she’ll play the mother. The movie also discovers the age gap as Moore gets involved with a man, much younger in age.

Meanwhile, Natalie Portman’s Dior outfits have also been making a lot of sound at this year’s film festival. In her recent appearance at the 76th Cannes festival, Natalie Portman donned the special recreation by Maria Grazia Chiuri of Dior’s iconic “Junon” gown from Fall/Winter 1949, which was designed by Monsieur Dior.

At the same time, Dior’s I Feel Blue gown, which she wore at The Zone of Interest premiere, was also highly appreciated by the spectators.

Notably, the Cannes Film Festival 2023 began from May 16 and will be concluded on May 27, 2023 with a closing event.
