Gomelauri also brought up the issue of stricter sentences for drug-related offences, citing recently-approved amendments that set a ten-year of minimum punishment for the selling of drugs, psychotropic and psychoactive substances.

By summing up the activities of Ministries, Gomelauri stated that since 2021, the state body has been monitoring persons who have committed crimes against sexual freedom and sexual inviolability. Moreover, he stated as many as 240 employees had been trained in 2021 to investigate such crimes with the involvement of the Georgian Government.

The Georgian official also stated that the Interior Ministry’s efforts to combat organised crime remained a top priority and revealed plans for a steady rise in the number of law enforcement officers, as well as the implementation of services in all of the country’s major cities.

Moreover, Gomelauri was speaking at the Parliament session today as part of his turn to address MPs in the Minister’s Hour format, where officials of the Government cover matters concerning their field of work and answer questions from lawmakers.

In mid-February, Gomelauri also informed the regional chief of departments all over the country in a meeting that the police departments all over Georgia have increased their rate of solving criminal cases from 35.5 per cent to 49.8 since last year.

Gomelauri briefly described the past year’s trends of crimes committed in the country and talked about the significant challenges for Police officials in the near future, concentrating on leading indicators of the outcomes of the work against crime and public safety issues.
