Tbilisi: Nikoloz Basilashvili, who had been facing the charges of abusing his ex-wife, has been given clearance by the Tbilisi court. The tennis player, known for breaching the ATP’s top 20 in 2019, had married model Neka Dorokashvili. Its been three years since Basilashvili was accused of physical abuse by his wife.

Following the accusations of domestic violence from his wife, Basilashvili was arrested in May 2020. The couple parted ways back in 2018.

However, the prosecution hasn’t welcomed the decision from the court and has decided to appeal further. The prosecutor claims to have presented enough evidence to prove the guilt of the accused.

“The prosecution categorically disagrees with the court’s decision. The prosecution had presented a number of clear evidence, which proved the issue of the accused’s guilt. The prosecution had the feeling that the court has failed to clearly evaluate the evidence that exposed Nikoloz Basilashvili in the crime. It evaluated the objective evidence subjectively and shared the position of the accused and his family members”, said the prosecution.

At the same time, the court’s verdict hasn’t gone so well with the tennis fans. Many fans have questioned the decision of the court and quoted it as an injustice against women in Georgia. One of the tweets from fans read as -:

“You can’t find justice as a woman in Georgia, and btw a day before this ruling the court staff went doing selfies and autographs with Basilashvili during a break, didn’t wait a day to hide their bias.”

Dorokashvili testified against her ex-husband for limiting her ability to work and taking over her social media accounts. On the other hand, the court has stated that the bruise on her body can be attributed to holding her baby in an awkward position, as confirmed by a medical examination.

Since then, the court’s decision is being criticised by various fans on social media platforms.
