Georgia: Kelly Degnan, the US Ambassador to Georgia, while attending the event of the American-Georgia Business Council on Friday, stated that discussions regarding direct flights between Georgia and the United States were likely to begin, which according to her, would be wonderful.

“I think anyone who ever took a flight from the United States to Georgia would understand how great an experience it would be to have a direct flight. It is something that’s been the topic of discussion for some time. Before COVID, in particular, there was some progress, and I think the discussions are beginning again very soon”, said Degnan.

Degnan stated that the pandemic had certainly affected the travel industry in many ways and isn’t sure about where that discussion is and what is the economic extent of the issue as the travel industry moves ahead after the pandemic.

“It certainly would be an important connecting link between the United States and Georgia. I have often said that sometimes it is hard to convince people in the US to come to Georgia for the first time because it seems so far away from there. But you never have trouble getting them to come back the second time once they have experienced Georgian hospitality”, stated the US diplomat.

Talking about the free trade agreement, The ambassador noted – “That’s a sphere under the control of the US Trade Representative and not the State Department.”

The direct flights would serve as a significant connecting link between Georgia and the US. The feasibility studies were conducted back in 2018, so there’s a certain interest in pursuing it. We’re always in search of opportunities of building close partnership between Georgia and the United States have, and to expand the relationships that we’ve had, to attract more American businesses into Georgia, and more Georgian businesses into the United States”, stated Degnan.
