Georgia: Agriculture Minister attends first national forest census event

Georgia:The Georgian agriculture minister, Otar Shamugia attended the first national forest census event. Georgia:The Georgian agriculture minister, Otar Shamugia attended the first national forest census event. The meeting had in attendence, the representatives of the legislative and executive authorities, US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan, Head of Cooperation Development of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in South Caucasus Lydia Christman.

“The main goal of the National Forest Count is to obtain accurate information on the quantitative and qualitative traits of forests in a short period of time.” Let us remind you that about 44% of our country’s area is covered with forests, and with this indicator, we are one of the most forest-rich countries. This is why it is important for us to ensure that sustainable forest management is implemented in the county. I would like to express my gratitude once again to all parties involved, thanks to international partners, the German Government and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), technical and finance of the national forest census process. “To support what”, said Otar Shamugia.

 It is noteworthy that the National Forest Counting Program is carried out with the support of the German Government and with the technical assistance of the International Cooperation Society (GIZ).

“Based on the data presented today, it will be possible to make correct political decisions in the future. “I would like to thank all Georgian experts and the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture for their active involvement,” said the Head of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany for Cooperation Development in South Caucasus, Lid Yaa Christman.  “The National Forest Counting Programme of Georgia will protect Georgia’s forests even better. The United States Department of Forestry, with the United States International Development Agency (USAID) and Georgia, have been working for many years on natural resources conservation management, preserving Georgia’s unique biodiversity Blad and simultaneously providing employment opportunities in the sector. As a result of the program, the right decisions will be made regarding forest management and land management in general. Our efforts in this direction will continue,” said US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan.

The process related to the national forest census started in 2015, with the financial support of the German Government. In 2017, a working group made up of Ministry and GIZ specialists was formed, and more than 5 million euros was allocated for the work.

 Ketevan Khutsishvili, Manager of Rural Development, Civil Safety and Crisis Management Programs of the Austrian Embassy, also attended the discussion of the report Nelly Alexander Karner, representatives of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), environmental NGOs and invited experts.
