Georgia: Otar Shamugia signs agreement on food security, sanitary and phytosanitary measures

Tbilisi: Otar Shamugia, the Minister of Environment and Agriculture and Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Georgia, Raymund Yele, signed the agreement document. The Agreement signed in accordance with the Neighbourhood Program ENPARD IV by the Swedish Development Agency to support food safety, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, 3.4 million Ni provides financial support in the amount of US dollars.

 Otar Shamugia spoke about the importance of growing the production of quality products for the country and highlighted the issue of support towards the implementation of knowledge and modern technologies.

 The minister thanked the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the Swedish Government for many years of effective cooperation, and in the process of getting closer to the EU and simplifying access to European markets, focusing ENPARD IV. 

 “All the processes that are connected with the country’s integration with the EU are proceeding smoothly and successfully. The Ministry is fulfilling its responsibilities with utmost care. It will be noted that the support of international partners is most important in this process, for which I would like to thank you,” Otar Shamugia said.

 The Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Georgia, Raymund Yele, spoke about the successful implementation of ENPARD III and the country’s food safety, sanitary and phytosanitary measures within ENPARD IV He expressed his desire to achieve tangible results.

“The agreement is yet another example of successful collaboration between the Ministry and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. It is important that we start a new project in which experts from FAO, the Czech Republic, the EU and the Kingdom of Sweden will be equally involved. Effective implementation of this project will be another step forward in the process of Georgia’s integration with the European Union”, – said Raymund Yele.

 As the Deputy Ambassador of Sweden, Erik Iles, noted that Georgia is a reliable partner for the Swedish government and is pleased with the possibility of cooperating in the sanitary and phytosanitary aspects of the project.

 The meeting held at the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture was attended by the First Deputy Minister Giorgi Khanishvili, representatives of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and relevant heads of the Ministry.
