Tbilisi: The Ministry of Environment and Agriculture celebrated the International Soil Day. The event was opened by the Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Otar Shamugia with a welcoming speech. He spoke about the importance of soil and the need to protect it. The Minister focused on the measures that the state is taking to implement the principles of sustainable soil management.
“Rational soil management is directly correlated with food security, which presents an important challenge to the global community. In the background of climate change, the issue of soil degradation is acute. In this context, raising young, qualified specialists is an important task for the country. I think that with a united effort we can ensure the protection of the soil,” Otar Shamugia said.
Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili addressed the participants of the event, who spoke about the importance of strengthening the economy of the country by preserving soil fertility.
Among the invited guests was Giorgi Kvesitadze, President of the National Academy of Sciences, who pointed to the importance of soil diversity in Georgia.
“There are 29 soil-climatic zones and 14 soils in this small country. This creates such serious diversity that it is equal to almost all of Europe, where there are 34 soils and 780 million people. This speaks about the uniqueness of the country,” said Giorgi Kvesitadze.
Within the framework of the event, successful young specialists employed in the public, private and non-governmental sectors of the agricultural sector, students of higher educational institutions, researchers working in scientific and research sectors will be given ground knowledge One of the founders of Georgian school B, academician Tengiz (Gizo) Urushadze, was awarded honorary certificates.
At the event it was noted that Tengiz Urushadze makes a great contribution to the development of the Georgian School of Soil Science. Mr. Gizo’s professional and public service is motivating and setting a good example for future generations.
By the order of the Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, the awards event will take on an annual, traditional face, which will encourage young personnel and create a basis for the promotion and support of the field of soil science.
It is noteworthy that the International Day of Soil Protection, since 2013, is celebrated on the basis of the decisions taken at 68 UN Assemblies.
