The Georgian Flag is an expression of our identity, our national spirit and our unique culture. Our Flag preserves a history that is precious to each and every citizen and is proud of it. It also unites the history of our country and its people, values we have defended for centuries and always will.

Prime Minister Garibashvili remarked on the efforts and sacrifices that Georgian ancestors have made to keep up the integrity and dignity of the country and the Flag. He added: “Our people have worked hard to reach today, and we have achievements that keep us moving forward and building a better tomorrow.”

Garibashvili also felicitated the defence forces, the soldiers who have been selflessly serving the nation in extreme conditions. He thanked the forces for their services and acknowledged their efforts in building a dignified and a brighter future for Georgia.

“On the occasion of National Flag Day, I congratulate the peace and unity defenders of our country, our heroic soldiers and those whose service has always brought our country’s dignity and bright future.”

The Georgian Flag was formally adopted by Parliament on January 14, 2004. It became a symbol of the Georgian Patriotic movement after Georgia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

The leader of the major opposition party, Mikheil Saakashvili, had conducted the formal endorsement of the Flag via Presidential Decree No. 31 signed on January 25, after being elected as the President.
