Georgia observes World Meteorology Day

Tbilisi: Georgia, on March 23, observed the World Meteorology Day.  The head of the National Environmental Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture congratulated specialists of hydrometeorology on the department on their professional Day. During a meeting held at the agency, the head of the hydrometeorology department spoke about current projects and future plans.

It is noteworthy that, in recent years, important work has been carried out in order to expand the hydrometeorological observatory network throughout Georgia, which promotes the improvement of the meteorological forecast and a better evaluation of the hydrometeorological regime in the country.

At this stage, the monitoring is underway at 107 meteorological and 85 hydrological observation points. By the end of this year, additional 72 units of the automatic hydrometeorological station will be installed.

In 2023, the theme of the World Meteorology Day is “The future of climate, climate and water is in the hands of youth,” highlighting the role of future generations in taking action on climate action.

As part of the World Meteorology Day celebration, organized by the Centre for Environmental Information and Education, schoolchildren inspected the National Environment Agency’s meteorological radar.

The students, along with field specialists, discussed the importance of timely delivery of forecasting information and warnings to appropriate agencies on possible natural events, analyzing meteorological radar data in the country and characteristic geological hazards.

The establishment of World Meteorology Day on March 23, 1950, is related to the entry into force of the Convention of World Meteorological Organization on the basis of the United Nations World Meteorology Organization (WMO). Georgia has been a member of the World Meteorological Organization since 1992, and the World Meteorology Day has been celebrated every year since.
