Georgian Ministry celebrates language day with distinguished guests

Georgian Ministry of Education and Science hosted an event dedicated to Georgian Language Day. Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Giorgi Amilakhvar, Minister of State for Reconciliation and Civil Equality Tea Akhvlediani and Chairman of State Language Department Giorgi Alibegashvili.

Giorgi Amilakhvar, during his speech, focused on the importance of State Language Day. Giorgi Amilakhvari: “For each of us, the Georgian language is an integral part of identity, and it plays an important role in maintaining national self-sufficiency. History remembers many examples of this – one of the most important days in our recent history is April 14, 1978, when the population of Georgia organized a mass demonstration and opposed the decision of the Soviet Union to abolish the Georgian language as a state language in Georgia.

“For the first time in the history of the Soviet Union, thanks to the solidarity and joint efforts of our compatriots, the communist regime retreated.” Please be reminded that April 14 is the day of the Georgian Language is related to this very proud and important event.

It is a great honour for me that today we are present here at the events of April 14, 1978, who have contributed greatly to the scientific research and teaching of the Georgian language. Today, our primary goal is to preserve the earnings of our fellow citizens and to promote better state language teaching. Ministry will continue to work actively in this direction. “

Tea Akhvlediani stressed the importance of knowledge of the state language in the culturally and linguistically diverse society of Georgia.

Tea Akhvlediani: Georgian language, distinguished by its diversity, strength and uniqueness, as our greatest wealth and a firm foundation of our national identity, asserts the consolidation of our multicultural, ethically and linguistically diverse society, allows us to communicate, cooperate, share culture and traditions with each other. That is why the Georgian government, within the framework of the state policy of civil equality and integration, gives the highest priority to raising the level of knowledge of the Georgian language in the non-Georgian society of our country.

On this background, it is underlined that in the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia, the Georgian language is still purposefully restricted, which is a manifestation of the policy produced by the occupation regime for many years. Although the Georgian government, within the framework of reconciliation and inclusion policy, offers high-quality higher education programs to young people living in the occupied regions and creates the opportunity to enrol in higher education without experience, there are exceptional young people who prepare independently, find the strength and courage to compete high Let them successfully pass national exams in the Georgian language within the framework of the Nation. “

During the event dedicated to the Georgian Language Day, the Minister of Education and Science of Georgia and the Chairman of the State Language Department awarded three brilliant scientists – Mzekala Shanidze, Damana Melikishvili and Zhuzhuna Feikrishvili for their special contributions to Georgian language teaching and research.

During the event, Minister of State for Reconciliation and Civil Equality Tea Akhvlediani and Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Giorgi Amilakhvar awarded Scholarships named after Dimitri Gulia and Kosta Khetagurov to students living in the occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, who showed the best results in the combined national exams of 2022-2023.

Ministers also awarded symbolic gifts to four graduates representing ethnic minorities who, after successful completion of the Georgian language education program (1+4), continued their studies in the Georgian-language bachelor program, and today they teach themselves in non-Georgian schools in Lower Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions.

Gifts were also given to graduates of Azerbaijani and Armenian-language schools, who earned high grades and were enrolled in higher educational institutions on the basis of successful completion of three compulsory subjects specified by the Unified National Exams, and Social programs of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia are also financed by a state educational grant Within the framework of it.

Within the framework of the event dedicated to Georgian Language Day, the presentation of the third bulletin of Georgian literary language norms was also held. In addition, the beneficiaries of the Volunteer Program of the State Language Department presented their projects to the public, for which the Language Department Chairman awarded them special prizes.

Guests at the event also had the opportunity to get acquainted with publications of the State Language Department. At the same time, the beneficiaries of the “Non-Georgian-language Schools Support Program” of the National Center for Teachers’ Professional Development presented a calligraphy masterclass and handmade books on the theme of the mother language.
