Tbilisi: The Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia presented the results and challenges of implementation of international conventions on chemical management.

The working meeting of the Agriculture Ministry was held within the framework of the project “International Approaches to Chemicals Management (SAICM) and Conventions of Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Minamata at the national level”.

During the meeting The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Solomon Pavliashvili presented the results and challenges of the implementation of international conventions on chemical management and also talked about the agenda of cooperation with the EU and the decisions of each parties to the convention.

“The Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture is actively working to meet requirements under the EU Association Contract, including safe management of chemicals.

 The country has made significant progress in ratifying the Minamata Convention, it is planned to strengthen legislation and harmonize with EU directives in accordance with the requirements of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions,” stated the Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Solomon Pavliashvili.

The project “International Approaches to Chemicals Management (SAICM) and the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Minamata Conventions” aims to strengthen institutional capacities at the national level by implementing integrated approaches to safe management of waste and chemicals in the country.

The project promotes the implementation of the mentioned conventions and the International Approaches to Chemicals Management (SAICM) and strengthening of institutional capacity.

It is noteworthy that the project is being implemented by the Caucasus Regional Environmental Center (REC Caucasus) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
