The chairman of the Georgian Dream (GD) party, Irakli Kobakhidze, stated on Wednesday that the Georgian Government is applying for the European Union (EU) membership.

However, the Georgian Government earlier planned to apply for membership of the European Union in 2024, but the move comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for EU membership amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.

Georgia’s ruling party stated that it would “immediately” put forward an application to join the European Union (EU).

In the special briefing, the head of the GD party stated that the Government of Georgia, led by PM Irakli Garibashvili, was already preparing an application for EU candidate status.

In addition, the chairman of the Georgian Dream (GD) party emphasised that asking for EU membership in 2024 with fresh reforms would have been preferable to applying quickly.

However, given a general political context and new reality, following the consultations with the representatives of the party’s political council and, first of all, with the Prime Minister, the Georgian Dream’s political team made a political decision to apply for EU membership immediately, Irakli Kobakhidze stated, adding that the application for EU candidate status will be officially submitted to the EU structures on behalf of the Georgian Government tomorrow.

The ruling Georgian Dream party chairman called on the European Union (EU) structures to consider the application on an urgent basis and decide to grant Georgia the status of EU candidate.

On Tuesday, the Committee on European Integration of the Georgian Parliament prepared a draft resolution on the country’s integration into the European Union, calling on EU member states and institutions to take all necessary steps to accelerate Georgia’s accession to the Union.
