In Georgia, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development on Friday, March 18, issued a statement refuting a media report on a Russian Air Force aircraft entering Georgian airspace between Moscow and Yerevan.

In response to the report published by the local TV channel, the Ministry stated that the incident could evolve into another international scandal on the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by rejecting the happening and accusing the local channel of releasing “dangerous, harmful and irresponsible” information.

Moreover, the Ministry also said, “it should be noted that this local TV channel continues to make dangerous, harmful and irresponsible assessments, specifically amid the ongoing war in Ukraine,” before denying any Russian Air Force aircraft had crossed the country’s airspace.

It also confirmed the use of the Georgian airspace by a “normal civilian flight”, stating a Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations aircraft used an aerial route.

An aircraft with the registration number RA76429, controlled by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, flew over Georgia. According to the Ministry, the flight was a normal civilian flight that did not require any special approval from Georgia, which oversees the usage of Georgian airspace.

Furthermore, the journalists of the TV channel spread false information using completely unverified messages obtained from their own “news” sources or political groups, and they carried out a campaign against the Georgian government by making irresponsible statements directed not at the government but at the security policy of our country.

Georgian airspace has been closed to Russian military aircraft since the 2008 war between the two countries, according to the Ministry’s response, but emergency management aircraft were exempt from military status and can use the space.
