Spanish Premier to travel to Kyiv in coming days

SpainSpanish Premier Pedro Sanchez has planned to travel to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the upcoming days, said government sources of Spain’s top media outlets.

The Spanish head of the Government is all set to meet and hold discussions with his counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy to show Spain’s “solidarity in person,” according to Spanish daily El Pais.

Moreover, Sanchez’s trip to the war-torn country will also overlap with the reopening of Spain’s embassy in Kyiv, which he announced on Monday that it would be reopened soon.

Before his plan to visit Kyiv, many leaders worldwide have toured the war-torn Kyiv in recent weeks. Sanchez has followed the footsteps of several other European leaders.

As per the reports, the leaders who have visited Kyiv have cited that journey to Ukraine has become safer since Russian troops have fled the area to focus their aggression on eastern Ukraine.

Since the war erupted, the Premiers of the UK, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia, as well as President of European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, have paid a visit to Ukraine.

Furthermore, on Monday, Press Secretary of White House Jen Psaki briefed the correspondents that President Joe Biden has yet no plans to pay a visit to Kyiv.

But the US is also seeking to reopen the US embassy in Kyiv, following Spain.

However, many countries have reopened their embassies in the city during this month, including Turkey, Italy, the Czech, and France.

According to UN estimates, at least 2,072 people have been killed and 2,818 injured in Ukraine since the conflict began on February 24, with the actual figure likely to be far higher.

According to the UN refugee agency, over 4.9 million people of Ukraine have escaped to other nations, with more than 7 million internally displaced.
