Georgia: Otar Shamugia gets familiarized with Zemo Alazani irrigation system in Telavi Municipality

Georgia: Otar Shamugia, Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, and Tengiz Nasaridze, General Director of Georgian Land Reclamation Ltd., got familiarized with the rehabilitation works of the Zemo Alazani irrigation system in Telavi Municipality and met with local farmers.

The project, which costs more than 3 million GEL, envisages the restoration of a 12.4-kilometer-long aqueduct and its branches. As a result, water will flow smoothly into the canal, providing additional irrigation for 300 hectares of agricultural land.

“We are making large investments in the rehabilitation of reclamation infrastructure across the country, both with budget funding and donor support. At the initiative of the Prime Minister, we are gradually launching rehabilitation infrastructure projects worth about GEL 200 million, which will significantly contribute to the stable water supply of our farmers. In addition, it is important to introduce modern irrigation technologies. To support farmers, we finance drip irrigation systems under the “Implement the Future” and “Preferential Agro Credit” programs; “Within the framework of the” Implement the Future “program alone, new intensive gardens have been planted on approximately 17,000 hectares, which are fully equipped with modern irrigation systems,”- noted the Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Otar Shamugia.

According to the Minister, it is important to build and rehabilitate the relevant reservoirs against the background of climate change. In this regard, a study is being conducted with the assistance of the World Bank, the results of which show where it is possible, where is the optimal arrangement of reservoirs and the rehabilitation of existing facilities.

As part of the works, the distribution canal and its branches will be cleared of trees and shrubs; existing pipes will be replaced with new ones, and hydrants and hydraulic structures will be installed. The population of the village of Ruispiri will benefit from the irrigation canal.

It should be noted that 90 rehabilitation infrastructure rehabilitation projects have been implemented in the Kakheti region since 2012. The total cost of the work is 53.6 million GEL.

As a result of the implemented works, more than 16 thousand hectares of agricultural land in the region are regularly irrigated, water supply has been improved to 13,300 hectares, and more than 8,000 hectares of arable land have been drained.
