Georgia: Maka Bochorishvili, Chair of the Committee on European Integration, took part in the sitting of the Interparliamentary Committee in the European Parliament, where the EU enlargement policy was discussed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, Georgia is a country that has repeatedly experienced Russian aggression and continues to fight against the occupation and its dire consequences. It is unfortunate that only after large-scale hostilities in Ukraine has it become possible to realize the real nature of Russia and take effective steps against it, ” said Maka Bochorishvili, chairwoman of the European Integration Committee.

According to her, a significant achievement is a decision made by the EU Council on June 23, which gave the prospect of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia joining the EU.

The Chairman of the Committee on European Integration spoke about the successful reforms implemented in the country after the signing of the Association Agreement.

“The progress we have made since the signing of the Association Agreement is visible. It is these reforms that have made Georgia an attractive country in many ways, despite the security challenges facing the country. Like Ukraine and Moldova, Georgia is not yet eligible for candidate status, although it is important that Georgia is part of the EU’s enlargement policy. We will continue the path of reforms that will advance Georgia on the path of European integration and bring us closer to the ultimate goal,” – said Maka Bochorishvili.

In her speech, the Chairman of the Committee on European Integration responded to the recent assessments of the European Parliament regarding Georgia.

“It is disappointing that the European Parliament’s recent assessments of Georgia are based on a misinterpretation of the facts or are completely unfounded, as Georgia operates in a very difficult geopolitical environment. Mistakes like these only increase the dangers and do not help us to neutralize them. We expect the European Parliament to make assessments about Georgia on the basis of better analysis and more caution. Further EU decisions will help us unite the nation around common European goals, as this is what 85% of the Georgian population wants, ” Maka Bochorishvili said.
