For the first time in the history of Georgia, UNESCO has included two territories in the international list of biosphere reserves. None of the territories in the South Caucasus region had the status of a biosphere reserve. Dedoplistskaro Biosphere Reserve and Sam Alazani Biosphere Reserve are the first precedents in the region.

“The study of the potential for the establishment and development of the biosphere reserve began in 2015. Kakheti region was selected. With the support of the European Union, the preparation of relevant documents for the creation of a biosphere reserve in Dedoplistskaro Municipality has started, ecotourism infrastructure has been developed, and a number of measures have been taken. At the same time, a similar process began in the Telavi and Akhmeta municipalities with the support of the German government. Large-scale works were carried out; Without such support, the result would have been difficult. As a result, a historic decision was made by UNESCO on June 15,” Otar Shamugia said.
