Dominica: PM Roosevelt Skerrit extends condolences to victim families of Guyana dormitory fire incident

Roseau, Commonwealth of Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit extended condolences to the families of the 19 children who succumbed to the dormitory fire incident in Mahdia, Guyana.

Prime Minister Skerrit took to his social media handle, where he posted an emotional message for the victim families, praying for their strength in such a difficult phase and wished for the quickest recovery of those suffering from critical injuries and undergoing treatments in hospitals.

PM Skerrit expressed solidarity with the Government and the citizens of Guyana that mourn the loss of their beloved ones in the tragic incident. At the same time, the citizens of Dominica also paid their condolences to the departed souls and their grieving families.

As per the Department of Public Information, the fire claimed 19 lives, out of which eighteen fatalities reported were girls and one boy. Notably, 13 girls and a boy lost their lives at the site of the incident, while the other five breathed their last at the hospital, owing to the severity of their injuries.

Meanwhile, the President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, has assured that the Government is and will continue to mobilize the maximum possible support and resources to mitigate the loss the horrific incident has inflicted on the country and the victims’ families.

It is noteworthy that about 56 children were present at the dormitory at the time of the incident. Another revelation made by the police spokesperson revealed that the primary investigation signals towards fire being deliberately set at the dormitory, which was reportedly confirmed by the firefighters as well.

However, the investigation on the matter is going on to unveil what actually led to the tragic incident claiming the life of 19.
