For the first time in the history of Georgia, two territories have been granted the status of a biosphere reserve. UNESCO approved the nomination submitted by the Government of Georgia without any remarks.

UNESCO has recognized the “Dedoplistskaro Biosphere Reserve” (Dedoplistskaro) and “Three Alazani Biosphere Reserve” (Tusheti) and included them in the international list of biosphere reserves.

The decision was adopted within the framework of the 34th session of the UNESCO International Coordinating Council “People and the Biosphere”. The Secretariat of the UNESCO Human and Biosphere Program approved the nomination submitted by the Government of Georgia without any remarks.

It should be noted that no territory in the South Caucasus region has had the status of a biosphere reserve to date. Dedoplistskaro Biosphere Reserve and Sam Alazani Biosphere Reserve are the first precedents in the region.

Nino Tandilashvili, Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, and Tamar Khakhishvili, Deputy Chairman of the Agency for Protected Areas, attended the meeting in Paris.

A biosphere reserve is an instrument for implementing unified practices of nature conservation and sustainable land use. The biosphere reserve contributes to sustainable regional development and biodiversity conservation and plays an important role in adapting and mitigating climate change. There is a growing interest in the production of organic products, which is directly related to sustainable economic development. With this in mind, the creation of a biosphere reserve provides a great opportunity to increase economic and tourism potential.

The potential for the establishment and development of a biosphere reserve in Georgia has been studied since 2015. Priority was given to the Kakheti region, which met the criteria set for the development of the biosphere reserve.

Nominations for UNESCO were prepared with the financial support of the German Government, the Zukov Foundation, GIZ and the European Union, in cooperation with the Caucasus Regional Environmental Center (REC Caucasus). In December 2021, the complete documentation of the “Dedoplistskaro Biosphere Reserve” and “Three Alazani Biosphere Reserve” was sent on behalf of the Government of Georgia to the UNESCO Secretariat for People and the Biosphere.
