The Armenian and Azerbaijan defence ministries reported the breakout of deadly clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenian forces along the borders on Monday night as the old hostilities regarding the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Azerbaijan had re-established its control over the disputed territory in a conflict that went on for six weeks in 2020.
The Azerbaijani artilleries and UAV’s targeted sites in Vardenis, Goris, Sotk, and Jermuk in eastern Armenia. While Armenian forces carried out large-scale assaults, on Dashkasan, Kalbajar and Lachin, including certain mining areas.
The forces of Azerbaijan suffered casualties in the clashes that went on overnight. Armenia, on the other hand, made no mention of the losses or casualties.
As per the sources, the Yerevan Government would be invoking a cooperation agreement with Russia and appeal to the Russia-led security bloc, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation as well as the United Nations Securit Council.
Along with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan has called French President Emmanuel Macron and United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss the current situation at the borders.
The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged for an immediate end to the clashes in his statement issued on Tuesday morning – “As we have long made clear, there exists no military solution to such conflict,” Blinken said in a statement. ” We urge an end to any military hostilities immediately.”
The Republic of Artsakh is a de facto republic that has been internationally recognized as a part of Azerbaijan. Back in 2020, Azerbaijan had recaptured the region where this republic is located.
