Ukraine to receive US Patriot missile system

Russia-Ukraine War:   The United States, led by President Joe Biden, will provide Ukraine with its Patriot Missile defence system to combat the aerial strikes from the Russian army in the ongoing war. The cost of each Patriot Missile ranges around one to six million US Dollars. The move from the United States aims to strengthen the air defence system of Ukraine and protect the territorial dignity of the country.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed that Russia deployed Iran-made Shahed drones to attack Kyiv. Of which the Ukrainian defence forces had shot down 14 drones in response to the attack.

Earlier, Germany had provided Ukraine with IRIS-T anti-aircraft missile systems and thirty(30) armoured vehicles. Besides this, the aid packages, including anti-drone sensors, and 42 demining vehicles, were sent to support Ukraine in its war against Russia.

About The Patriot

The MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile system(SAM) which is widely used by the United States Army with several other allies. The cost of each unit ranges between US$1 to 6 million.

Each patriot battery consists of a truck-mounted launching system with eight launchers that is capable of carrying four missile interceptors each, aground radar, a control station and a generator.

The Patriot missiles have been optimized for engagements against aircraft, possessing limited capability against ballistic missiles. The operational range of Patriot is estimated at 70 kilometres ( 43 mi).
