Georgia: The Georgian weightlifters Lasha Talakhadze, Irakli Chkheidze, and Shota Mishvelidze will compete at the Paris Olympic Games 2024.
Three weightlifters were added to the ranks of Georgian licensees of the Paris XXXIII Olympic Games: it was officially confirmed that Shota Mishvelidze (61 kg), Irakli Chkheidze (102 kg), and Lasha Talakhadze (+109 kg) will compete at the Paris Olympic Pitzarnag. Seok already received the appropriate letter from the International Weightlifting Federation.
Shota Mishvelidze won silver and bronze at the World Championships and two golds, two silvers, and one bronze at the European Championships; Irakli Chkheidze was a silver medalist at the European Championships; and Lasha Talakhadze has been the leader of the weightlifting world for many years—a two-time Olympian, seven-seven-time world champion, and multiple-time record holder.
The Georgian team has competed in five licensed tournaments in the last year and a half, and considering the results, it was necessary to reach the top ten in the ranking to qualify for the Olympic road. Lasha Talakhadze is leading in this rating, Shota Mishvelidze is in seventh place, and Irakli Chkheidze is in ninth place.
Regarding the leader of the women’s team, Anastasia Gottfried, it will be known two weeks before the start of the Olympic Games whether she will get a license or not.
It is worth noting that in weightlifting at the Paris Olympics, unlike the 2020 Tokyo Games, where the medal set was played in seven weights, in Paris, five to five weights will be played in terms of gender equality. Georgia will be represented in three out of five weights.
Lasha Talakhadze
Lasha Talakhadze is a Georgian weightlifter, holding the all-time world records regardless of weight category in the snatch, the clean and jerk, and the total since 2021. Talakhadze is a two-time Olympic, seven-time world, and seven-time European champion competing in the super-heavyweight category.
