Tbilisi: The authorities have launched many drives to mitigate pollution in the country. In the previous nine months, 5758 violaters were fined for non-compliance with emission standards prescribed by the authorities.
It is to be specifically mentioned that from September 4, 2023 employees of the  Department of Environmental Supervision of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture are monitoring motor vehicle emissions. They have launched their drive in four big cities of Georgia, Tbilisi, Rustavi, Kutaisi, and Batumi.
The new law was enacted in the country last September and till June 4, 2024  a total of 5738 legal entities and individuals were fined. The fines have been imposed under different categories for non-compliance with the established norm of vehicle emissions. The drive was carried out by moving crews of the department to check the vehicles.
It is also worth mentioning that the most number of violations, i.e., 2742,  were recorded in Tbilisi, followed by 1147  in Kutaisi, 982  in Batumi, and 867  in the city of Rustavi.   At the same time out of the the 5738 offenders fined by the employees of the Department of Environmental Supervision 5006  are individuals  and 732 are legal entities .
Moreover 3542 penalty receipts have been issued against 1944 car drivers, 245 minibuses drivers ,245 truck drivers, and 7  bus drivers as well. Notably in the case of a natural person  the amount of the fine is 100 GEL for the first time violation and at the other time it will be 300 GEL  and 600 GEL for the third time for non-compliance with the norms established by the legislation of vehicle emissions.
On the other hand  for a legal entity  the fine is 500, 1500, and 3000 GEL, respectively  for first, second, and third-time violations. According to rules and regulations if the fine is paid within 10 days  it will be reduced by 20%.
It must be noted that citizens can check fines on the Department of Environmental Supervision’s website, www.des.gov.ge, and pay it through the Ministry of Internal Affairs website.
