Georgian PM, Irakli Garibashvili, held a farewell meeting with Li Yan, the Ambassador of China to Georgia, on Wednesday. In the meeting, both officials discussed bilateral ties between the two states and the trade-economic and investment ties.
As per the sources, Garibashvili stated that China was among Georgia’s top five trading partners and cited that the free trade agreement signed by both countries in 2017 had further boosted trade between China and Georgia.
Moreover, the Chinese ambassador pointed to the importance of bolstering ties between China and Georgia, noting that the direct flights between both countries facilitated tourism.
The Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili praised China for its aid, which included efforts to send Covid-19 vaccinations to Georgia last year, while the Chinese diplomat reaffirmed China’s “strong support” for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In 2019, Li Yan was appointed as the People’s Republic of China’s ambassador to Georgia.
Furthermore, Georgia-China ties are the foreign relations between Georgia and the People’s Republic of China. On June 9, 1992, the two countries established diplomatic ties. Since then, bilateral relations have gradually improved and are now primarily focused on economic cooperation. Georgia has an embassy in Beijing, and China has an embassy in Tbilisi.
China had become Georgia’s 4th-largest trading partner and the 2nd-largest exporting market for Georgian wine. Georgia’s commitment to the One-China policy has been recognised by China, which has backed Georgia’s territorial integrity by refusing to recognise Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
