Georgia: In response to the war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine, Lelo has submitted a draft resolution to the Parliament.

The Parliament confirms that on February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation launched an unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine’s sovereign territory, as well as a large-scale military attack on the country, according to the draft resolution.

According to the document, the Russian Federation’s Armed Forces carried out military aggression in several parts of Ukraine, including Bucha and other cities, during an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine’s sovereign territory, resulting in the destruction of homes, schools, and kindergartens, as well as the killing of hundreds of civilians, including many children, and the exodus of four million Ukrainian citizens with refugee status from the country.

“The Parliament denounces the measures taken by the Russian Federation’s Armed Forces on the sovereign territory of Ukraine, which clearly shows signs of war crimes and crimes against humanity, as well as systemic human rights violations and other grave crimes committed in infringement of international law.

Moreover, the Parliament urges the international community to make every effort to investigate war crimes committed by the Russian Federation’s Armed Forces on Ukraine’s sovereign territory.

The Parliament calls on all states to use the various international formats, platforms, and mechanisms at their disposal to impose legal responsibility on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian Armed Forces heads and commanders, members of the Russian Security Council, and all appropriate officers legally responsible for the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

The Georgian executive is instructed by the Parliament to work closely with the Ukrainian executive in order to exchange experience in documenting and investigating Russian crimes perpetrated in Georgia during the 2008 conflict.

The executive branch is also directed to support Russia’s suspension from the UN Human Rights Council,” according to the draught resolution.
