Solomon Pavliashvili took part in the fourth plenary meeting within the framework of the project “Assessment of the Circularity of the Georgian Economy”. At the meeting, the methodology and approaches used to assess the level of circularity of the country’s economy, the main stages of the assessment, key findings, and recommendations for increasing circularity were discussed.

A large part of the Circularity Level Assessment Report has already been prepared, and a draft of this document will be available shortly. The members of the coordination council discussed the vision, purpose, and perspectives of the circular economy of Georgia.

“We are working on a circular economy strategy. In the process of work, we discussed issues related to production, consumption, waste management, reuse, investments, and innovations. The circular economy is complex in nature, and, therefore, it is necessary to consider all factors. At this stage, 14 sectors have been selected at the level of microeconomics, and the study of circularity in these sectors is underway. As a result, a final document will be created in the country, where the degree of circularity of the Georgian economy will be determined, on the basis of which the strategy will be developed. In the mentioned process, it will be important to implement pilot projects”, said Solomon Pavliashvili.

At the meeting, an international expert in circular economy issues, Dariusz Edward Prasek, spoke about Sweden’s experience in the direction of circularity and presented “Sweden’s 2022 report on circularity gaps”.

The project “Assessment of the circularity of the Georgian economy”, funded by the Swedish government, aims to assess the circularity of the Georgian economy in close cooperation with the Georgian government and provides for solving the following important tasks: assessment of the circular economy in Georgia, identifying opportunities for the introduction of the circular economy according to sectors, determining priority sectors for circular economy initiatives and developing recommendations for a circular economy guide and strategy for Georgia.

The meeting was organized by the Union of Nature Researchers of Georgia “Orkis”, in close cooperation with the Ministries of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Economy and Sustainable Development, Regional Development and Infrastructure, Education and Science, and with the financial support of the Swedish Government.

The meeting was attended by the chairman of the environment protection and natural resources committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Maya Bitadze, the head of Sweden’s international development and cooperation department, the deputy ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Georgia, Erik Eles, and representatives of relevant agencies.
