Georgian chess legend Gaprindashvili’s defamation lawsuit against Netflix ends with mediation

Georgia: Chess legend Nona Gaprindashvili’s lawyers, on Wednesday, stated that her defamation case against the giant Netflix for Queen’s Gambit series has ended with mediation. No further details on the case have been provided so far.

Georgia: Chess legend Nona Gaprindashvili’s lawyers, on Wednesday, stated that her defamation case against the giant Netflix for Queen’s Gambit series has ended with mediation. No further details on the case have been provided so far.

Her lawyer Kakha Sharabidze revealed that the US Court of Appeals had initiated the settlement of the case. Thus, reaching an agreement with Netflix during the mediation process.

“No changes in the film to be made”, stated her lawyer without providing any further details. And the elimination of defamatory circumstances had been carried out by the agreement of the parties. 

  A work of art does not constitute a zone free from defamation, said the judge in the California court; calling the lawsuit by Gaprindashvili, an important precedent in this industry and the field of law.

Gaprindashvili’s lawyer Maya Mtsariashvili stated that the main purpose of the lawsuit was to refute the false information that was being broadcasted in the Netflix series- The Queen’s Gambit, about the Georgian chess player.

The lawsuit against Netflix’s Queen’s Gambit series was filed in September 2021. The series had shown its fictional hero Beth Harmon as the only female champion who faced men . Moreover, Gaprindashvili was shown to be a Russian chess player.

According to Gaprindashvili, the episode has been set in 1968. By then, she had faced at least 59 male chess players, including 10 grandmasters.

The suit also stated that Gaprindashvili has been described as Russian, despite being aware of her Georgian nationality and that Georgians had suffered under Russian domination when part of the Soviet Union and had been bullied and invaded by Russia thereafter.’ 

Gaprindashvili had demanded for five million USD as compensation along with the removal of the disputed sections.  

The Georgian chess legend is a five-time world champion and winner of 11 Olympiads in chess.
