Russia-Ukraine War: The European Union has called for an international tribunal over Russian invasion of Ukraine after hundreds of graves have been discovered in Izyum, a town that has recently been liberated by Ukrainian troops. The graves are said to be civilians , women and children among them.
“In the 21st Century, such attacks against the civilian population are unthinkable and abhorrent .We must not overlook it. We stand for the punishment of all war criminals.I call for the speedy establishment of a special international tribunal that will prosecute the crime of aggression,” Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky said.
Ukraine stated that such war crimes have been committed in Izyum, where 59 bodies have been exhumed till now and there is probability of more graves being discovered in a forest at the edge of the city.
The president of Ukraine,Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his regular address on Saturday stated that investigators had unveiled new evidence of tortured used against the people that were found buried in Izyum , in Kharkiv region.
“More than 10 torture chambers have already been found in the liberated areas of Kharkiv region, in various cities and towns. The Russians would have to answer “both on the battlefield and in courtrooms,” stated Zelenskyy.
The president chief of EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen expressed her urge for the Russian president, Vladimir Putin to face the International Criminal Court for his war crimes inflicted in Ukraine.
However, Russia has claimed that its fight in Ukraine revolves around de-nazification of the Ukraine. And this isn’t a war, rather a special military operation. While it has refrained from making any comments over grave sites in Izyum and as earlier, has denied any kind of civilians being targeted in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops have continued to press counter-offensives in the north-eastern parts of the country. The Russian president, however, stated that Russia wont change any plans due to these counter-offensives.
