Tbilisi: The chairman of the Georgian Parliament’s committee on human rights, Mikheil Sarjveladze, on Monday stated that the law of deoligarchisation has been formulated to fulfil one of the 12-point conditions that European Union has put front for granting Georgia, the membership candidate status. The law does not intend to favour or oppose any specific kind of person.
Sarjveladze highlighted that there exists no objective basis for a conclusion over the initiative being somewhere in relevance with the former prime minister of Georgia, Bidzina Ivanishvili.Â
The main thing for the concept of an oligarch is a person making use of the government for their own interests and having specific influences in relation to the government. In this case, we do not have it“, he said with respect to the former PM.
“I rule out the application of this law to Bidzina Ivanishvili personally. As for other people, anyone who may have such kind of influences in administration may naturally be subject to the regulation of this law”, stated the parliament official.
Earlier, on October 3, Anri Okhanashvili, the chair of the Georgian Parliament’sParliament’s legal affairs committee from the Georgian Dream ruling party, stated that working group working towards implementation of the European Union’sUnion’s conditions was preparing to present its bill on deoligarchisation.
Okhanashvili informed about the beginning of the discussions on the bill, which would begin after the Council of Europe’sEurope’s Venice Commission submits its reports on the Ukrainian version of a similar initiative.
He further stressed that the bill aims to achieve the amendments through a broad consensus and added that the political views of all political groups and international allies on the issue would be interesting.
