Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced that 475 million euros will be allocated from the state budget for the renovation of Tbilisi subway cars. They will be purchased 212 units of modern subway cars in accordance with international standards.
Tbilisi metro needs to be renovated. It is also necessary and important to replace moving assemblies, as it is often the fact that old trains are out of order, which hinders the functioning of the subway as a whole.
It can be said that today another important decision was made for the development of Tbilisi’s transport system.
With the support of the Georgian government and personally, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, 475 million euros will be allocated from the central budget, which will completely replace the Tbilisi metro trains.
This is a large-scale and, one could say, historical project, because so far, Soviet-made trains have not been replaced in the Tbilisi metro and 48 trains (in total, 192 cars) are serving Tbilisi, which were produced and put into operation between 1974-1992.
Although these trains have been repaired a few times to extend their service life, including during my mayor ship. In 2017-2020 we carried out a modernization project and capitalized on the stopped trains, increasing the number of units operating on the line.
The joint decision of the Government of Georgia and the City Hall of Tbilisi will solve not only the problem of out-of-service trains, but also the issue of increased passenger numbers. The planned project plans to purchase and replace more than the existing – 212 units of international standard wagons, which will be implemented step-by-step over the next 15 years.
As of today, on working days, more than half a million passengers take the Tbilisi metro, so this decision ensures comfortable and safe travel for these people.
In the coming days, a market study will be announced, showing the results of international tenders for foreign companies with high qualification and experience producing subway cars and foreign trains”.
