Georgia: The Georgian Basketball Federation (GBF) announced that Serbian coach Alexander Dzikic will be the new head coach of the Georgian men’s national basketball team.

Dzikic will replace Greek coach Ilias Zouros, who led the team to its first FIBA World Cup appearance in 2023.

Dzikic, 49, has a rich coaching experience in Europe and the NBA. He was the head coach of Jerusalem “Hapoel” in Israel until recently, and he also worked as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Utah Jazz in the NBA.

He coached several European clubs, such as Buducnost in Montenegro, Partizan in Serbia, and Lietuvos Rytas in Lithuania. He also served as the head coach of the North Macedonia national team in 2014-2015 and the Serbian under-20 team in the 2011 European Championship.

Dzikic signed a contract with the GBF that covers the 2025 Eurobasket cycle, which includes the qualifying tournament and the final stage. The contract can be extended after the fall of 2025, depending on the parties’ mutual agreement.

Dzikic will be assisted by Anatoly Boisa and Manuchar Markoishvili, who have been working as assistant coaches for the Georgian national team with the previous coach, Zouros, in recent years. Boisa and Markoishvili are former Georgian national team players in various European leagues.

The Georgian national team is ranked 23rd in the FIBA world rankings and has qualified for the Eurobasket five times since 2011. The team’s best result was the 11th place in the 2011 edition. The team also made history by qualifying for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where it finished 17th out of 32 teams.
