Tbilisi: The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia charged one person with persecution. He was charged after the completion of the initial inquiry.
It is to be specifically mentioned that an investigation was conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs after receiving the initial complaints. The investigation has established that in the period 2021 to 2023, in one of the villages of Terjoli municipality, a public school teacher systematically established unofficial and unwanted communication with his colleague.
The accused tried to take sexual favour from the victim and tried to intimidate the victim as well.Moreover, the accused person insisted on sex with the victim and despite the categorical refusal he continued to try to approach her. The victim was forced to make a significant change in his lifestyle and take a long unpaid leave off work.
The representative of the office termed it as a grave offence based on gender discrimination. They also said that the accused will be dealt with the strictest legal provisions.
Sexual violence is a heinous kind of crime which is based on gender violence as well. It is also to be added that as per the official data of the department of the Georgian goverment gender violence is the biggest problem of country.
At the same time many initiatives are being taken to mitigate gender-based violence. In the last month many private and government organisations took part in the sixteen-day campaign against gender-based violence.
The school teacher was charged with the first part of Article 151 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (the pursuit that caused the victim’s mental suffering and fear of using violence).
Prosecutor’s Office appeals to the court of law as a measure of restraint for the accused for using imprisonment and dismissal of the accused within the legally stipulated period.
Also to investigate the facts and take appropriate legal measures, the Prosecutor’s Office addresses the relevant Resource Center of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia.
