Tbilisi, Georgia: The Personal Data Protection Service (‘PDPS’) announced that it is launching a series of podcasts related to the new Law of Georgia on Personal Data Protection (‘the Law’), which was adopted by the Parliament of Georgia on June 14, 2023. The podcasts aim to explain the major legislative changes and their implications for data subjects and data processors in Georgia.

The podcasts will cover 10 topics, including the scope of the Law, the new principles and foundations of data processing, the rights of data subjects, the responsibilities of data processors, the rules for implementing video and audio monitoring, the data security measures, the personal data protection officers, the direct marketing regulations, the new rules for filing administrative benefits and complying with the PDPS requirements, and the international data transmission and appointment of a representative.

The PDPS said that the podcasts are designed for those who are interested in learning more about the new Law and its impact on their personal data protection. The podcasts will also provide practical guidance and tips on how to comply with the Law and protect one’s rights and interests.

The podcasts will be gradually published on the PDPS website 1 and social media platforms. The PDPS invited the public to follow its pages and listen to the podcasts, as well as to share their feedback and questions.

The new Law, which replaces the previous Law of Georgia on Personal Data Protection of 28 December 2011, is a result of Georgia’s commitment to harmonize its legislation with the European Union (‘EU’) standards and best practices in the field of personal data protection. The Law is influenced by the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) (‘GDPR’) and aims to provide comprehensive and robust data protection requirements to Georgian data subjects and data processors.

The Law will enter into force on January 1, 2024, and will apply to any data processing activities that are carried out in Georgia or that affect data subjects in Georgia.
