The office of the Public Defender of Georgia has strongly condemned the reports of the recent attack on the protestors and civil activists. They have been protesting the decisions taken by the state regarding the village of Baldi Canyon of Martvili Municipality for months. They have build  a tent near the village of Baldi Canyon.
According to the office representative the tense situation in the area has already become extremely aggravated in recent days. However  on the evening of June 11  the people in the tent were attacked by armed men. The two people have been reportedly injured in this attack.  One was critically injured as they received multiple injuries and underwent a surgical procedure also.    The eyewitness said that the minors were also present on the spot during the attack. The law enforcement authorities have also detained the accused.
The participants of the event said that the attackers were supporters of the project implementing company. Later on  on June 12  once again  the attack on the injured was also reported. While expressing concern about the problem the public defender said that the current situation is becoming more tense and dangerous daily. Thus the state must take all effective steps to ease the situation and resolve the crisis. Moreover  dialogue is the only way forward  and there is no alternative to dialogue and mediation with the protest participants to achieve this.
It is also to be added that considering the crisis situation in Baldi village of Martvili municipality as well as the special importance of the discussed issue itself, the Public Defender of Georgia calls on the heads of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and the Agency for Protected Areas of the State of Georgia to use all available resources and ensure a meeting with the interested public in the coming days.The office also urged the concerned authorities to rebuild the trust of the people in law and order situation.
