Tbilisi: The United States of America once again reiterated his country’s support for Georgia sovereignty. He was speaking on the 16th  anniversary of the Georgia-Russian conflicts.

US Secretary of State highlights “steadfast support”  for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He underlined yesterday that although bilateral relations have fluctuated after the foreign agents law, this will not affect the USA’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty. This will strengthen the relations of both countries in the long term.

In the press statement which was released by the US Department of State a day ago, Secretary of State Blinken also paid his tribute to all of those who were killed in the conflict and remembered those who were displaced as well during this conflict.

Speaking further on the development the Secretary of State added “ Today sixteen years have passed since Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Georgia. The invasion of Russia cost many precious lives as well. We have today remembered all those who lost their own life or their family members. “

It is worth mentioning that Russia has illegally occupied twenty percent of Georgia’s land. Moreover  Russia also imposed its own rules and regulations for the people living in these areas.

The US official further urged the Russian authorities to honour their commitments and obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement. The 2008 agreement envisions the withdrawal of Russian forces from the occupied territories to the pre-conflict positions.

According to Blinken, we have called on Russia to reverse its recognition of Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions as so-called independent.  It is to be added that the conflict has caused huge destruction on Georgia’s side. Furthermore, Georgia has also lost a big piece of land.

On the other hand  in Georgia  many commemoration events were held. The national flags on the national government buildings were also lowered. The PM and other higher officials have also paid tributes to the missing people. The remains of 16 missing people were also received by the Georgian authorities and buried at the designated sites.
