Georgia: The Georgian National Olympic Committee (GNOC) announced its deep sorrow over the death of Gogi Topadze, a great champion of Georgian sports and, a well-known businessman and politician, who passed away on 16, 2025, Sunday.

The Georgian National Olympic Committee (GNOC) shared a note on Gogi Topadze’s life, mourning his death, on its official Facebook page on February 19, 2025, Wednesday. The committee also expresses condolences to his family and relatives.

According to GNOC’s note, Gogi Topadze was actively involved in Georgian sports and the Olympic movement for many years, as President of the Ski Federation, Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee of Georgia, and Acting President.

It is particularly appreciated and important for the development of winter sports in Georgia, for supporting our teams and prospective athletes, his efforts to create the best training conditions, which made it possible for Georgian athletes to participate in major international competitions, including the Winter Olympic Games.

It is noteworthy that, Giorgi Topadze was an initiative, energetic, innovative person who successfully combined active socio-political and business activities, while also being successful in sports.

Background History of Giorgi Topadze

Giorgi Topadze was born on April 18, 1940, in Tbilisi, he had a distinguished career in both business and politics. He graduated from Tbilisi’s 51st Secondary School in 1957 and continued his studies at the Faculty of Food and Chemical Industry at the Georgian Polytechnic Institute. After graduating in 1962, he began working as a research associate at the Scientific Research Institute of Food and Industry. In 1967, Topadze enrolled in the postgraduate program at the All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of Organic Chemistry in Moscow. In 1969, he defended his dissertation and was awarded the title of Candidate of Technical Sciences.

Since 2005, Topadze led the political movement “Industry Will Save Georgia.” That same year, he was elected President of the European Chamber of Commerce. Also in 2005, he became the first Georgian businessman to be awarded the Patron’s Gold Medal. In the 2010 local self-government elections, Topadze ran for the position of Mayor of Tbilisi.
