Georgia: The World Environment Day was celebrated with a large-scale cleaning action on the territory of the Cross Monastery of Georgia. The event was held within the framework of the voluntary platform “Forest Friend“. The platform involves the private sector and volunteers in the processes of forest protection and restoration.
Students of Tbilisi State Medical University, representatives of the company “IDIES Borjomi Georgia” and volunteers took part in the cleaning action. On the slope of the Jvari Monastery, 5 seedlings of a sapling of the Jvari monastery were planted.
It is noteworthy that within the framework of the project “Friend of the Forest“, in the territory of the Cross Monastery, a forest project has been prepared for 31 hectares.
The new forest will be created with the involvement of the public and private sectors. On the slope of the Jvari Monastery, the territory is divided into 140 units. In the area, step by step, depending on the seasons, 25,300 different types of trees and bushes will be planted.
Volunteers will also take care of the forest agency under the supervision of the forest agency. The forest built on the slope of the Jvari Monastery will be the first precedent in terms of scale and importance.
Project “Forest Friend” is an exemplary example of forest care, volunteer activity, and environmental responsibility distribution.
The National Forest Agency provides forest restoration and maintenance, selection of areas under the control, preparation of forest restoration projects, and supervision of works. The main goal of the project is to unite communities around environmental responsibility. The platform must gather not only volunteer groups but also the private sector, including large companies.
The platform allows both individuals and companies to sign up as volunteers and be physically involved in various forest maintenance, restoration, and forest maintenance activities; donate with a desired amount that will be directed to finance reforestation projects; choose a specific reforestation project and fully or partially funded.
Voluntary platform “Friend of the Forest”
The voluntary platform “Friend of the Forest” was created on the initiative of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, the National Forest Agency, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and UNDP’s Biodiversity Financing Initiative (BIOFIN).
Since 1973, World Environment Day has been organized on the initiative of the United Nations and is dedicated to one of the most actual environmental issues throughout the year. The main message of the World Environment Day in 2025 is to defeat plastic pollution.
A number of events were held by the authorities within the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture to celebrate World Environment Day. In Lagodekhi, the Agency of Protected Areas held a concluding event of the scientific-educational project “I Protect the Nature of my country“.
The National Environment Agency celebrated World Environment Day in Batumi, with a demonstration of a drone collecting waste in the water and a beach cleaning action.
The Center for Environmental Information and Education held an infographic and exhibition of their works for schoolchildren in the yard of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture.
