Georgia: The National Environment Agency, in cooperation with the Swiss company GEOTEST, surveyed glacial valleys in Georgia. The study aims to strengthen disaster risk assessment and improve early warning systems in mountainous regions.
GEOTEST has extensive experience in working with hazard assessment and prevention recommendations in almost every country in the world, and is one of the best companies in Europe.
Within the framework of the cooperation, field studies and technical assessments were carried out in several high-risk mountainous areas, focusing on glacier-related hazards such as floods, landslides, and avalanches.
The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, David Songhulashvili, shared the glimpses of the working meeting on his official Facebook Page on January 16, 2026, Friday. The Minister also shared a small note about the meeting along with its highlights.
It should be noted that research of this scale was the first time in the region, emphasizing once again its need in the wake of climate change. The purpose of the study was to identify risk zones in hot spots found in glacial valleys.
The report of the research contains relevant recommendations for taking preventive measures, which means to predict possible threats, as well as other recommendations that minimize risks. In total, across the country, the dangers were assessed in 22 glacier valleys.
It is noteworthy that Georgian specialists were also taking part in the study of glacial valleys conducted by the Swiss company GEOTEST. For the research, sharing their knowledge, experience, and qualifications on the geography and geological characteristics of Georgia was of great importance.
The research has identified geographical areas where there are some challenges, and it is necessary to deploy modern monitoring systems and appropriate equipment. Preparation work has already begun by the National Environment Agency for the placement of these monitoring systems.
