The Georgian Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, continues meetings with representatives of state universities within the framework of higher education system reform.
The Ministry of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia shared the glimpses of the meetings on its official Facebook Page on February 27, 2026, Friday. The Georgian Education Ministry also shared a small note about the meetings along with its glimpses.
The Minister held a regular meeting at Shota Meskhia Zugdidi State University, where he introduced the administration staff and academic staff to the main directions of the reform process.
During the discussion, the participants also spoke about the challenges faced by regional universities and the importance of strengthening cooperation between universities and local communities to improve the quality of education.
Givi Mikanadze focused attention on the development of new programs focused on the demands of the labor market, as well as the importance of improving infrastructure.
Within the framework of the reform of the higher education system, regional universities will have a profiling burden. From the next academic year, admission of students to Zugdidi State University will be mainly on agricultural, pedagogical and tourism educational programs. The programs of other directions will go into militant mode.
“I would like to point out that in this process we will retain academic staff as much as possible, who play a major role in the development of higher education institutions,” said Givi Mikanadze.
The meeting was conducted in Q&A mode, and the participants had the opportunity to get exhaustive answers to interesting questions and to state their positions.
The Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Zviad Gabisonia, David Verava, the trustee of Samegrelo-Upper Svaneti region, David Kodua, the mayor of Zugdidi, and the rector of Zugdidi State University, Teona Khufenia, addressed the public.
