In order to get acquainted with dog hyperpopulation management reform, a meeting was held in Racha-Lechkhumi-Kvemo Svaneti on March 30, 2026, Monday. The main aim of the meeting was to control stray dog populations and improve public health safety.
The National Food Agency of Georgia shared the glimpses of the meeting on its official Facebook Page on March 30, 2026, Monday. The Agency also shared a small note about the meeting along with its glimpses.
According to the small note shared by the National Food Agency of Georgia, it should be noted that the meeting discussed planned events with veterinarians involved in the program and representatives of regional municipalities
Deputy Head of the National Food Agency Mikheil Dolaberidze and the agency’s veterinarians provided detailed information about the dog hyperpopulation management program to representatives of local municipalities at a meeting held at the Racha-Lechkhumi-Kvemo Svaneti State Trustee’s administration.
The meeting was attended by Christina Kobakhidze, the First Deputy of the State Trustee of Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti, who emphasized the importance of the implementation of this program and noted that the program will contribute to the protection of animal health and to creating a safe environment for humans.
“In the past years, we had several animal diseases, including measles, in the region. The environment that the program involves a range of complex measures, including rabies vaccination, will significantly contribute to both animal health protection, population management, and human safety. Municipalities will be actively involved together with the National Food Agency to implement the program as effectively as possible,” noted the First Deputy of the State Trustee, Christina Kobakhidze.
The Dog Overpopulation Management Program covers all municipalities in the region and includes:
- rabies vaccination of owned dogs,
- chipping,
- registration in a single database,
- sterilization of stray dogs,
- rabies vaccination of homeless/fenced dogs,
- identification/registration,
- castration/sterilization.
