The rehabilitation works of Bolnisi Sioni are carried out on the basis of a relevant permission issued by the order and legislation of the National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia.
The National Agency for Cultural Heritage Protection of Georgia shared the glimpses of the rehabilitation works on its official Facebook Page on April 21, 2026, Tuesday. The National Agency also shared a small note about the works carried out, along with its glimpses.
Ongoing works include the dismantling of 1970s basalt flooring in the interior of the cathedral, placed on a concrete kiln. As a result of the research work carried out in the interior, the southern part of the wall plaster and the southern part of Minashen, the floor of the early period was revealed, as well as the base of the plaster in its complete form.
According to this, the project considers dismantling the floor set up in the 1970s under the conditions of archaeological supervision and setting up a new, light-colored stone floor using the traditional Georgian system. In addition, the existing floor marker will be extended by several centimeters, providing a full perception of the proportions of the exposed columns and pilasters.
In the process of later removal of concrete and basalt layers, due to a technological necessity, in some difficult-to-remove areas, an appropriate mechanical drill-breaker is used, which is allowed in professional practice, which does not endanger the structural stability of the statue and does not cause damage to it.
Works are carried out under the constant supervision of archaeologists and relevant specialists in the field, documenting and controlling each stage of the process.
