The Deputy Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Minister of Defense Irakli Chikovani, hosted the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Colonel General Zakir Hasanov.
An official welcoming ceremony was held in the Ministry of Defense, after which the parties discussed various issues of bilateral, regional, and international cooperation.
The Ministry of Defense of Georgia shared the glimpses of the meeting along with the highlights of the ceremony on its official Facebook Page on June 1, 2026, Monday. The Georgian Ministry also shared a small note about the discussions held at the meeting, along with its photographs.
After the face-to-face meeting of the ministers, an extended meeting between the delegations took place. Irakli Chikovani thanked his Azerbaijani colleague for his unwavering support of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He reaffirmed to the guest his support for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It was noted that the strategic partnership between the countries is based on respect, trust, and friendly relations. The conversation touched on the importance of long-term and stable development of the South Caucasus region.
The parties discussed issues under the bilateral defence cooperation plan, including military education, social and psychological support, and joint participation in multinational military exercises.
The attention of the meeting was focused on the format of Azerbaijan-Turkey-Georgia trilateral cooperation in the direction of defense. Irakli Chikovan noted that trilateral cooperation – trilateral drills bring the military of these countries closer and strengthen interpersonality.
The meeting with the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan was attended by the Commander of the Defense Forces of Georgia, Lieutenant General Giorgi Matiashvili, the Minister of Defense, and the Deputy Commander of the Defense Forces.
During his official visit, the Minister of Defense of Azerbaijan crowned the Heroes Memorial and honored the memory of the heroes who died in the battles for the unity of Georgia. Later, the Azerbaijani delegation moved to the statue of Heydar Aliyev and decorated the memorial with a crown.
