Chairman of the Adjara Government Zurab Pataradze met with Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili to discuss about important infrastructure and transport projects in Batumi.
Representatives of the government arrived in Batumi by the Tbilisi-Batumi passenger train. As a result of the modernization of railway infrastructure, rehabilitation of landings and removal of traffic delays restrictions, the travel time between Tbilisi-Batumi and Batumi-Tbilisi has been reduced to four hours. At the same time, passenger stations have been renovated, existing trains are being modernized, and the procurement of new passenger trains has been started. Zurab Pataradze noted that fast and comfortable travel during the tourist season has special importance.
“Today we already see that it is possible to arrive in Batumi in just four hours. “Fast, safe and comfortable movement during the peak of the tourist season is one of our top priorities, which further increases the region’s accessibility and tourist attraction,” said the chairman of the Adjara government.
Government representatives visited Batumi maritime port today and got to know the sustainability and development potential of the country’s maritime sector. According to the data from the first six months of 2026, Batumi Port has maintained a positive momentum – cargo returns amounted to 2.5 million tons, and the number of recycled containers has increased by 14 percent compared to the same period of last year.
Attention was focused on direct shipments between Bulgaria and Romania to Batumi maritime port, whose number increased by 54 percent compared to last year.
According to the Prime Minister, strengthening the middle corridor and developing the maritime sector are among the country’s top priorities.
“Year-on-year, freight turnover is increasing, transit opportunities are developing and services are improving.” Batumi is historically a maritime city and still plays an important role in the economic development of the country. Therefore, we pay special attention to the development of both port infrastructure and the Batumi State Maritime Academy, so that young people can get education and practical experience according to international standards,” said Zurab Pataradze.
Prime Minister, Chairman of the Adjara Government and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia got acquainted with the renewed infrastructure of Batumi State Maritime Academy. Government officials visited the modern vehicle department, upgraded simulators of the Marine Training Center, and the training pool where there was a practical demonstration of personal rescue methods at sea.
Modern learning infrastructure enables students and current seafarers to receive international standard education and develop practical skills in an environment that is as close to real-world conditions.
Representatives of the Government of Adjara, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, the Parliament of Georgia, Georgian Railway, Batumi Maritime Harbor, and Batumi State Maritime Academy got acquainted with the projects.
