In cooperation with the State Security Service of Georgia and the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), an inter-agency field-practical exercise on responding to chemical and biological threats, “NEXUS Georgia 2026,” was held in Batumi.

Representatives of state agencies responsible for CBRN security, including the State Security Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories of Georgia, the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, and the Ministry of Finance, participated in the event.

Within the framework of the exercise, the participating agencies had the opportunity to work on three different scenarios of chemical and biological incidents in a real environment, to test the existing standard operating procedures in practice, and to identify specific gaps in the incident response and inter-agency coordination process.

As a result of the field-practical training, to eliminate the identified challenges, relevant recommendations will be developed, and new projects and exercises will be initiated with the support of partner countries.

It is noteworthy that on September 8 of this year, another simulation exercise will be held in Mtskheta, which will include practical training in responding to chemical and explosive substances in places of mass gatherings.

The State Security Service of Georgia has a long-standing and successful cooperation with the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency. DTRA provides significant support for the development and sustainability of the Georgian security sector, including in the direction of strengthening the capabilities to prevent and respond to CBRN threats.
