A joint meeting of Judges and Prosecutors held on “rights of disabled women”

A joint meeting of Judges with Prosecutor was convened to streamline the initiative for protecting human rights of women with disabilities in Georgia.

Tbilisi: A pivotal joint meeting was convened to streamline the initiative for protecting human rights of women with disabilities. The meeting  focused on the rights of women with disabilities and  attended by Judges and Prosecutors.

The meeting was organised by the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia. It also discusses the rights of women who are not just disabled but also have very limited psycho-social and intellectual abilities. These women due to their disabilities, cannot avail benefits of different social services.

It is worth noting that the training session was organized under the very important project “United Nations Joint Program for Gender Equality” (UNJP4GE), which is being implemented with funding from the United Nations Women’s Organization (UN Women) Sweden.

At the same time it also being supported  by the project “Strengthening gender equality and implementation of GREVIO recommendations.” The GREVIO (Group of Experts on Action Against Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence) guildlines aims to combat violence against women and domestic violence in Georgia.

It’s noteworthy that the training session saw the participation of international experts from various countries and organizations. They shared and discussed the approaches of the United Nations and the Council of Europe for the protection of women’s rights.

The experts from instiutes of international principles and guidelines for access to justice for persons with disabilities and many other departments were present.

The Human Rights Protection Department of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia presented a report analysing crimes committed against persons with disabilities. Participating judges and prosecutors discussed challenges to human rights and measures for uniform practices in national legislation and practice.

The Georgia Office of Prosecution has taken many initiatives to uplift the fundamental rights of women.  The officials and other representatives of the office have also said that such efforts for women’s rights protection will continue in future as well.
