Georgia: Minister of Environment and Agriculture Otar Shamugia congratulated the rangers on their professional day and gave them symbolic gifts. The event was attended by representatives of the Georgian Government, Diplomatic Corps and international organizations. During the event, guests paid a minute’s silence to honour heroes who lost in the line of duty.

World Rangers Day was celebrated this year in Lagodekhi National Park. Lagodekhi Protected Areas are the first protected areas in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Georgia. With its creation, the history and development of protected territories in Georgia began.

“I would like to congratulate all rangers on Rangers Day, thank and express my special respect for them for choosing a difficult and responsible profession and their special contribution to protecting protected areas.” Over 400 rangers across 21 administrative units protect our unique nature’s treasures. Each one of them, at the risk of their own life, performs their duty, which means poaching facts, dealing with natural and irregular fires, monitoring biodiversity, and ensuring cleanliness To help visitors within the scope of their competence. World Rangers Day is celebrated on July 31st. We celebrate this day later this year because of the tragedy in Gudauri, which claimed the lives of 8 heroic professionals of our country,” said Environment and Agriculture Minister Otar Shamugia.

One hundred ten years ago, in 1912, the first protected area in Georgia – Lagodekhi Reserve, was created, the area of which was only 3,500 ha.

Today there are 94 protected areas in Georgia, with a total area of 800 000 ha, constituting 11.5% of the country’s territory. Rangers are actively involved in the process of protecting nature. Each one of them, at the risk of their lives, performs his duty.

The Agency of Protected Areas of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture has celebrated the Professional Day of Rangers since 2017. This year, the agency awarded more than 40 rangers with Badges of Appreciation and Cash Awards for their special contributions to protecting and developing Protected Areas.

Compensations have been awarded to the families of rangers killed in the line of duty.

Rangers Professional Day was established by the International Federation of Rangers and celebrated for the first time in the world in 2007.
