Alliance of Museums’ annual gathering takes place successfully

Georgia: The Alliance of Museums’ annual gathering, held for the third year, was dedicated to the anniversary of Shalva Amiranashvili and was held successfully this year.

The Alliance of Museums awarded the best museums this year as well.

The event was attended by the Minister of Culture and Sports of Georgia, Thea Tsulukiani, Deputy Minister Nikoloz Aznaurashvili, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia, Academician Roin Metreveli, Director of the Georgian Palace of Arts Giorgi Kalandia, First Deputy Director of the National Museum of Georgia, Nika Akhalbedashvili, Director of Shalva Amiranashvili State Museum of Art I, academician Valeri Asatiani, members and delegates of the Alliance of Museums of Georgia They were in attendance.

Up to 500 employees of 200 Georgian museums participated in the assembly hosted by the Ethnographic Museum of Tbilisi, named after Giorgi Chitaia. It is noteworthy that at the third assembly, employees from both regional and private museums were removed from the Ministry of Culture’s governance field.

Three “Best Museums” were awarded the prestigious award established by the Ministry of Culture in 2022. The best museums were given cash awards along with the silver chest badge. The best museums of 2024 are:

  • Tinatin Sosanidze – Curator of the Precious Sector of Sergi Makalatia Historical Ethnographic Museum, Advisor-Consultant;
  • Roland Isakadze – Director of the Kutaisi Museum-Cemetery of the National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia;
  • Jumper Kopaliani – Administrator of Dmanisi Archaeological Museum-Sanctuary.

Minister of Culture of Georgia Thea Tsulukiani addressed the people gathered at the assembly, summarized the museum year, and discussed current and future projects.

It is noteworthy that during the event, a film and ethnographic museum dedicated to Shalva Amiranashvili’s anniversary were shown. The ceremony was solemnly closed with the concert of the Ethnographic Museum ensembles—”Didgori” and the Royal National Ballet “Potskhishvilebi.”

Thea Tsulukiani established the award “Best Museum” by the Ministry of Culture on May 18, 2022, to celebrate International Museums Day. The initiative belongs to the First Deputy Director General of the National Museum of Georgia, Nika Akhalbedashvili; the Director of the National Museums of Art and Culture, Giorgi Kalandia; and the Director of the Ethnographic Museum named after Giorgi Chitaia, Nino Chipashvili.

It should be noted that starting from November 2022, on the initiative of the Georgian Minister of Culture, all “Museum Alliance” cardholders can visit all museums of the Ministry of Culture system for free.

For information, Tinatin Sosanidze has worked in the museum field for over four decades. From 2000 to June 2002, he was the director of the Historical-Ethnographic Museum. Additionally, he was head of the Museums Department of the Gori Municipality Culture and Tourism Development agency from 2018 to June 2022. During his direct leadership, the museum was rehabilitated, and a transition to a modern standard of management and presentation was made. In 2019, he was awarded the title of honorary citizen of Gori, which he holds with dignity.

Roland Isakadze – 2014-2016 – Associate Professor, Akaki Tsereteli State University, Faculty of Humanities, History-Archaeology Department, Archaeology Department. Academic Doctor of History since 2006. 2012-2016 year – Manager of the Kutaisi Historical-Architectural Museum-Banquet of the National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia. 2009. – Author of the project for the rehabilitation of the Martyrs’ Monastery. From 2013 to 2014, he participated in archaeological research expeditions at Geguti Palace.

Jumper Kopaliani – is a doctor of history sciences and the author of over 50 scientific papers, including five books. Notably, five volumes of the scientific collection “Dmanisi,” prepared by him and published by him, represent the whole history of Lower Kartli, archeology, ethnography, and epigraphic monuments.

From 1981 to 1992, he was the deputy head of the Dmanisi archaeological expedition, and from 1993 to 2006, the head of the same expedition. From 1996 to 2006, he was the head of the historical-archaeological department of the Dmanisi Center for Archaeological Research.

He was the director of the Dmanisi Cultural Center from 2007 to 2011. He is currently the head of the archaeological exposition created by his initiative and the director of the Dmanisi Professional State Dramatic Theater named after Zinaida Kverenchkhiladze. He is a Cavalier of the Order of Honor and the laureate of the Ekvtime Takaishvili Prize.
